How to Export Emails Using Thunderbird

For most email providers other than Gmail (like Yahoo, Outlook, AOL, etc.), the most reliable way to create an .mbox file is by using the free email client Mozilla Thunderbird.

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Download and Install Thunderbird:

    • First, download Mozilla Thunderbird from its official website: www.thunderbird.net.
    • Follow the installation instructions for your operating system (Windows, macOS, or Linux).
  2. Add Your Email Account:

    • Open Thunderbird and follow the prompts to add your email account. You will need your email address and password. Thunderbird can typically detect the server settings automatically for most major providers.
  3. Install the “ImportExportTools NG” Add-on:

    • In Thunderbird, go to the Tools menu and select Add-ons and Themes.
    • In the search bar, type ImportExportTools NG and press Enter.
    • Find the add-on in the search results and click “Add to Thunderbird”.
  4. Export Your Inbox:

    • Once the add-on is installed, go back to your main mail view.
    • Right-click on your Inbox folder (or any other folder you wish to export) in the folder pane on the left.
    • In the context menu, navigate to ImportExportTools NG -> Export folder.
    • Choose the “MBOX file (one file for each folder)” option.
    • Select a location on your computer to save the .mbox file.
  5. You’re Done!

    • Thunderbird will save your emails as an .mbox file in the folder you selected. Now you can use LegacyMail to view your archive.
